5 Easy Steps for Getting Hired with QKids (+ FAQ)

Online teaching can give you the freedom to work from home and create your own schedule. I taught with QKids for 6 months and absolutely loved it! A lot of people have reached out who are interested in teaching, so I’ve compiled all my tips and tricks to getting hired with QKids!

Note: Make sure to read carefully. Your application can be denied for simple mistakes!!!

Step 1: Be Qualified + Fill Out The QKids Application Correctly

Before you waste your time, make sure you are qualified to teach with QKids. Each company has different requirements, so if you do not meet their requirements, move on to a different company!

  • Eligible to legally work in the US or Canada
  • Live in Canada or US
    • Supposedly you have to be living in Canada or the US, although I haven’t taught outside the US to see if the connection/network still works….
  • Bachelor’s Degree or above
    • I read that they hire University students who are in the process of getting their degree.
  • Able to teach 6+ hours weekly (12 – 30-minute classes)
    • Reviews on the company say during low season 6+ hours are not always available.
  • Prior teaching experience or equivalent in education, tutoring, mentoring, or homeschooling (coaching, training, etc. would probably be accepted as well)
  • Digital literacy
  • Stable internet (I had to buy an ethernet cord to meet requirements)
  • English teaching certificates (TEFL, TESOL, CELTA) are not a requirement but is highly preferred. Click here for more information about obtaining a TEFL certification.

Tips for being qualified for QKids:

Almost all online English teaching companies require prior experience.Honestly, whether you realize it or not, you have teaching experience. Think of a job or student organization or activity where you had to teach a skill or SOMETHING! ANYTHING. Write it down! That’s your experience! Make sure those things add up to a year.

Do NOT put “no experience” on your application, you will be denied!!!!!

My example teaching experience:

  • Taught English in Colombia for a month
  • Teaching Assistant for a class in college
  • Mentor in a student organization in college
  • Trained volunteers for AmeriCorps
  • Taught dance classes to kids
  • Zumba Instructor
  • Wrote instructional blogs
  • Trained employees at a serving job

(I put that I had 2 years of teaching experience on my application. After writing down all my experiences, I could have stretched it to 3 or 4 years.)

Don’t qualify? That’s okay! There are plenty of other companies that do not require a Bachelor’s degree or that you live in the USA/Canada! I recommend checking out: 8 Websites Where you can Teach English Online Without a Degree and a mega list of all the companies

Step 2: Have a QKids Referral Code

Whether it is QKids or a different company, I recommend getting a referral code from a friend or SOMEONE on the internet (lol). When you know someone, the better chance you have of moving through the interview.

My cousin’s friend (who I have never met before) reached out to me saying she loved working for QKids. I was originally going to apply for VIPKids, but ultimately went with QKids because of the referral. She walked me through the entire interview process and was there for any questions. Y’all, THIS is why I love the teaching community. Teachers are so genuine and helpful.

Referral codes help the applicant as well as the current teacher. There is a referral bonus for current teachers which makes it a win-win situation.

My QKids referral code is LOKGOR.

Step 3: Prepare For Your QKids Interview

  1. Headset (linked is the cheap headset I got off Amazon, it works great!)
  2. Ethernet Cord (I thought my internet was fast enough and didn’t get the cord at first. Buy the cord. They won’t let you progress to the trial classes unless your internet levels meet their standards.)
  3. A laptop with webcam
  4. Internet
  5. Blank wall/space to teach and build a “virtual classroom”

*After your first interview, they ask you to create your own classroom. For the first interview, you only need a blank wall behind you.

Step 4: Create a Teaching Resume

*Here is my “teaching resume”— it’s super basic, nothing extraordinary.

Note: it looks nothing like my resume for the states. It’s based off a few different online teaching resumes (specifically for Asian companies) I found online. I added “travel experience” to stand out, but it’s not needed.

Step 5: Ace The QKids Hiring Process

Apply with all required materials -> Initial screening -> Demo Interview 1 -> Demo Interview 2 -> Trial Classes & Background Check -> Contract

  • Required Materials
    • Resume
    • Availability
    • A Screenshot of Computer SPECS
    • 1-2 minute introduction video: Introduce yourself, where you live, your educational background, and any experience teaching or working with kids. Then tell or read a children’s story.

Tips for Introduction Video: Write an outline of everything you are going to say and practice it a few times before videoing yourself. When you’re ready, record on your phone/computer than upload to YouTube. I found a short story online and read a few pages. You do not need to buy a book. Keep in mind, they want you to work well with children. Use your hands and be animated with your movements. If you feel silly, you are doing it right. QKids includes example videos to help you.

  • Demo Interview 1 & 2
    • All materials are provided for you to succeed. QKids makes it easy for applicants to pass, IF you study the material.
    • The interview questions are very basic (what’s your experience, why do you want to work for QKids, etc.)

Tips for Demo Interview: Remember to give diamonds and praise “the student!” (The student is the interviewer pretending to be 5 years old.) If the student messes up, say “nice try!!!” or “SO CLOSE!!” Avoid saying negative feedback like “you are wrong” or “no that’s not correct.”

  • Trial Classes
    • Again, all materials will be given to you beforehand. You can go into the classroom and practice the lesson by yourself before the lesson. I think I had 24 hours or more before the lesson to practice the games and prepare for the trial classes.
    • My classes: I did 4 trial classes (2 more than expected). My coach gave me feedback from the first 2 classes than I taught 2 more the next morning.
    • The classes are paid ($8 per class + any bonuses for good feedback)

Tips for Trial Classes: Go into the classroom 5 minutes before the lesson. Some kids will be there waiting for you. Start interacting with them immediately (this is something I didn’t do lol). Put students up on the stage and ask them questions. If there is still time, play some sort of made up game or sing a song, something!

Also, remember to give 50 diamonds to students (more or less a few). AND, make sure to not go over time. If you are late to your next class (less than 2 minutes before your class time), the class is automatically given to another teacher. Again, You MUST arrive to the classroom TWO minutes before the scheduled time.

During your class, constantly be checking the clock to make sure you are on track!

QKids FAQ (things that aren’t answered on the QKids website)

Is QKids legit?

Yes, teaching online is legit. All companies are a little bit different. No, it is not a MLM, QKids is a legit business.

QKids computer specs?

  • A computer with a webcam
  • A headset with microphone (here’s the one I use)
  • Stable Internet connection (cable connection preferred)
  • Minimum upload speed: 2Mbps. Minimum download speed: 4Mbps. Test your speed here: http://www.speedtest.net/
  • Cable connection is recommended (you can buy an ethernet cable on Amazon here)

How long does it take to get hired with QKids?

QKids was pretty fast about getting back to me within a day or two. My two interviews were about a week apart. My trial classes were scheduled a little under a week after my second interview. Because of the Chinese New Years, I have to wait a week after being hired to finally start teaching. I’d say it took a little over a month from when I initially applied to teaching my first class. You’re process can go faster. I’d say 2 weeks to a month is doable.

How long is the QKids contract?

6 months.

What is the QKids pay? Maximum and minimum hourly rate? How often do you get paid?

$8 minimum per 25 minute class + bonuses = $16-$20/hour. Paychecks are 1x/month.

What are the QKids minimum hours?

6 hours.

How many kids will I teach at one time? How old are the students?

1-4 students. My students were around 5-8 years old. I usually taught lower level lessons.

Do you recommend working for more than one teaching company at a time?

Yes! I recommend applying with a few different companies especially if it is your only source of income. I also recommend Palfish, ITalki, and VIPKids.

Who is right for QKids?

I think QKids is perfect for someone who is just getting into teaching and plans to stay in the states/Canada for the next 6 months. The lesson plans are provided and there is SO much information to be able to succeed at the job. You must like children and feel comfortable teaching children. The kids aren’t always paying attention or understanding things. It takes patience and some creativity.

I’d like to note that the classes are SUPER early in the morning. Depending on the time zone you are in, some classes could start as early as 4am.

What are the QKids requirements for teachers?

  • Eligible to legally work in the U.S. or Canada
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Teaching license or English teaching certificate (TESOL, TEFL, CELTA, ESL) required before lessons assigned
  • 18+ years or order

What if I already applied and got denied? Can I reapply?

Good news! Yes, of course! It happens all the time. Maybe you forgot to put the right amount of teaching experience or didn’t have the right equipment. Simply make a new account using a new e-mail address.

Is QKids currently hiring?

Yes. They are always hiring.

VIPKid vs. QKids vs. Magic Ears vs. SayABC vs. SO MANY MORE! Why did you pick QKids?

There are SO many online teaching companies, why go with QKids? The reason I chose QKids because the knew someone personally who was a current teacher. She loved it. I will always go with a personal recommendation.

Will you help me through the process?

Yes. I offer help through e-mail, Instagram, or Whatsapp (contact information below). I’ve had a lot of people get hired using my code. I am happy to help you through the application and hiring process if you need!

What is teaching like? Pros and Cons?

If you prefer video, I recorded a reaction video after my first week of teaching online for QKids:

Note: it’s one of my very first YouTube videos, so the quality is not the best, BUT I think it’s a helpful video to know what to except. <3

If I get rejected, Can I reapply under another email and follow your tips? I honestly think that might be the case of my first rejection. Is it possible I got rejected due to high volume of applicant?

Hello! Unfortunately no, only Americans/Canadians. If you’re from elsewhere I recommend ITutorgroup, Palfish and Cambley.

This is great of you! I have 6 years (3 in Shanghai, 3 remote online in America) experience teaching, so hopefully I don’t have too much of a problem teaching with Qkids. If I have questions I’ll let you know!

    Feb. 18, 202,
    Dear Courtney,
Hello, I am looking for an added ESL online company. I currently work for VIPKID, and would love to add on QKids. I have applied at other companies, and I think my age of 64 is holding them back. I have everything 120 TESOL, 38 years in the public classroom, 4 years online with VIPKID , and 1 Year with 51 Talk. I am wondering if QKids will hire me as I am 64. VIPKId is great, I just want some more hours. I am retired too. Thanks for helping.
    Sincerely, Pam Newberry
