Thinking about starting a travel blog? Or maybe you’ve been blogging for a few years and WordPress is still kind of mystery? I feel you.
There are so many layers to the blogging world, it’s a source of indefinite learning. It’s exciting and sometimes (well, a lot of times) overwhelming. Whether you choose to take Nomadic Matt’s The Business of Travel Blogging course or not, I highly recommend courses as a way to master your craft!
This blog will cover who The Business of Travel Blogging course is for, what’s included in the course, how much it costs, and whether it’s worth the money.
How I Discovered The Business of Travel Blogging Course
Over three years into blogging, I kick myself for not taking online courses when I started. But, like most bloggers, it was purely a passion project at first. Writing wasn’t something that I thought I was good at, but I loved it.
Last year I started taking my blog seriously. I worked with a business coach and went to every networking event I could find in Chicago. I was determined to turn my blog into my business.
Later in the year, I went to Travel Con, a travel blogging conference hosted by Nomadic Matt (highly recommend!). I honestly didn’t know much about Nomadic Matt and had never even read his blog. I observed how well the travel conference was set-up, learned about his online courses, and saw how well his books sold. From a business standpoint, I knew I could learn something from him. He grew a network and expanding his blog into an empire. Matt’s not just a travel blogger; he’s an author, speaker, course creator, and businessman.
Regardless of his successes, the main reason I’ve grown to admire him is his passion for impact and serving his community. I think a lot of bloggers now focus on numbers and money (which I understand), but most importantly we are here to inspire and be a resource.
Whether you are just starting a blog or years into blogging, I think it’s important to take notes from bloggers whom you admire. I cannot stress how important it is to invest in courses and content of successful bloggers in your niche. After Travel Con, I signed up for Nomadic Matt’s e-mail list, then his course, and just got done reading his travel novel. I’m somewhat of a super fan at this point.
Super fan or not, this is an honest, unpaid review of Nomadic Matt’s The Business of Travel Blogging Course. I’m going to try to keep this short and sweet.

Who is The Business of Travel Blogging Course for?
This course is perfect for beginner bloggers because it walks you through exactly how to start your blog. It explains everything in detail for someone who has no idea what a domain is or how to use WordPress.
This course is also perfect if you have been blogging for a while and want to start monetizing your travel blog (aka make that shmoney).
Thirdly, it could be useful for travel bloggers who want to see what a successful course looks like. I personally want to create courses in the future. I think it’s important to learn from the best.
Summary:
- Anyone who wants to start a blog (information is great for travel bloggers, but applies to all niches)
- Intermediate bloggers who want to start monetizing
- Bloggers who want to turn their blog into a business and get an overall view of how to successfully do that (from one of the most successful travel bloggers in the industry)
Pros and Cons (Honest Review of The Business of Travel Blogging)?
Pros
- Detailed – the course is a full overview of everything you need to become a successful blogger
- Approach – he leads with passion and impact first, follows with smart business practices (it’s not all about making money, the money will come once you build something worth the money)
- Actionable – a lot of things taught were small changes that I could implement right away that could make big impact in the future
- Good examples – every lesson he provided examples within his own blog and how he implemented certain practices. There was always a way to get even more (free content) out of the course (relate blogs, books, etc.)
- Community – The Nomadic Matt FB and community is huge. It’s a good community to be a part of.
- Highly Recommended – a bunch of my blogging friends have taken the course and loved it, the course has been around for awhile (updated regularly) and there are a lot of positive reviews from bloggers of all levels.
Cons
- No video – I personally enjoy courses that have a mix of video and written content.
- Not many deep dives – for me, I liked how it was an overview (because I had a lot to learn), but if you wish to dive SUPER deep into SEO (advanced level) or whatever else – this is not that course. I would say it’s a beginner to intermediate level of coding, CEO, e-mail marketing, affiliate marketing, etc. (Although some advanced level bloggers still recommend the course.)
- Self-guided – because it is self-guided it is easy to buy the course and forget about it. You’ll need to motivate yourself to complete the course. (I created a schedule in my calendar to stay on track, but I fell off a few times.)
How Much is it? It is Worth it?
$149 USD (was $249 USD)
Short answer: Yes, I think it’s definitely 100% worth the price.
It’s a course that I will keep going back to for information. Not everything may be applicable right now depending on where you’re at in your blog, but it’s loaded with information you’ll want to go back to.

March 28, 2020 at 5:43 pmHi Courtney, thank you for such a detailed description of the course. As a travel blogger, I’ve seen quite a few webinars and Youtube videos, but I’ve never paid for a course, and it looks like there is definitely a lot of value for someone just starting out. I have a degree in Marketing and PR, so I have a pretty good grasp on what I should be doing, my biggest issue (I think) is focusing on the 2 or 3 channels instead of spreading myself too thin.. But, there is still so much to learn!. I would love more in-depth training on SEO or affiliate marketing. I hope you’re doing well and enjoying your year in South Korea! Will you be staying for another year? Where are you going next?? Excited to continue following your adventures!
